Whatman 42 filter papers were used as the substrate to the absorb the liquid prior to analysis. The paper was dipped into the sample, then allowed to rest on the analysis surface for several minutes prior to analysis. Samples were not dried. It was also found that 2 layers of filter paper worked better as it prevented laser breakthrough to the metal plate under the samples. This describes the results using a Czerny Turner spectrometer, then next paper describes the results using an echelle spectrometer.
